NPC New England FAQ - Q&A

Q: People say that Im not ready to compete in the NPC.
I hear that I have to be (pick one) "huge" / "ripped" / "have lots of muscle" / etc. to compete in the NPC?

A:Not true. Prior to 2005, the general area sanctioned just 2-3 competitions per year, so yes, we saw a lot of great competitors mixed with novice competitors, thus reducing the newer competitor's chances of placing well.

As of 2008, the NPC sanctions 8 plus events in the greater New England area of various levels, from local level which are perfect for novice and first time competitors, to regional level for those looking to advance one day to national level competition. We feel at this point that we have "something for everyone".

Also, please keep in mind that the competitors that you see in the magazines are typically national level and professional. If you find them at the local shows, they are often in a "helping the show" capacity, ie. judging, expediting, or guest posing. We discourage advanced competitors from competing in our smaller events and professionals do not compete in any NPC shows at all, only our IFBB professional events across the world.

Q: Whats with the natural shows? I thought the NPC didnt have natural shows.
A:The NPC sanctions both tested/natural and non-tested events. For years now Mike Katz has maintained a commitment to natural bodybuilding with his annual Natural CT show. Recognizing a need for natural events in New England, we decided to support Mike further in 2007 and launch a series of natural events, using the same testing protocols as the other natural events that exist in the area, but under an NPC sanction.

We also welcome other promoters to sanction their events with us, while maintaining their integrity and dedication to the high quality natural competitions that they currently exhibit elsewhere. We feel that promoters joining the NPC would enhance and grow New England Bodybuilding, Fitness, & Figure even more, and certainly to the benefit of the competitors, the main priority of any promoter.

    Q: What is the NPC?
A: NPC is short for National Physique Committee of the USA, Inc. It is the oldest sanctioning body for physique competitions in the United States.

The NPC is amateur US affiliate to the IFBB, and has events such as the Arnold Classic and Olympia.

These events do not recognize any other physique organization in the US.

Q: How do I get into the NPC?
A: Competing in the NPC requires annual membership card which expires every December 31st. From there, simply sign up for each competition that you would like to enter and good luck!

Q: What is NPC New England?
A: New England has had a long tradition of bodybuilding competition. Since 2005, the NPC in New England has seen a complete change in leadership in all of the states. Dave Follansbee has taken control of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Current IFBB Pro Maggie Blanchard took control of Rhode Island in 2006.

Together, Maggie & Dave joined forces and assembled NPC New England, a wonderful group of individuals in the area who run the day to day activities of the NPC. Individuals currently include IFBB Pros Heidi Fletcher and Carla Salotti, as well as NPC Jr National Champion Lori Steele and the world famous Mike Katz, Mr. Universe and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's co-star in the movie "Pumping Iron".

The whole group can be found here.

Q: How do I get in touch with my favorite competitor?
A: Many competitors have their own personal websites and myspace pages through which you can contact them directly. It is our policy to not give out any personal contact information to the general public.

Q: How old do you have to be to compete?
A: The sanctioning body require that a competitor be at least 13 years of age. Individuals under the age of 18 must have an adult chaperone, ie. parent or legal guardian.

Q: How do I become an NPC Judge?
A.The NPC has two levels of judges; District (State) Level and National Level.

Becoming a District Level judge requires sitting in with the the judges and testing successfully at three NPC competitions.

After four years of judging at a District Level, you may test judge in the same method for National Level judge, pending approval from the District Chairman. Upon obtaining a National Judge's card, you may then judge events such as Team Universe, the USA, and the Nationals.

There are currently 3 national level judges in New England; Dave Follansbee, Mike Katz, and Jerry Mastrangelo. Mike Bernier and Maggie Blanchard have been approved to test judge in 2008.
